Española Area
Española is considered the heart of Northern New Mexico. Just 27 miles north of Santa Fe, 25 miles south of Taos and 17 miles west of Los Alamos, Española serves as a hub for many smaller, rural and traditional towns and pueblos. A majority of population is Hispanic and Native American, along with a good mix of other folks including a large and prosperous Sikh community. It sits right on the Rio Grande, and is soaked with history – the first state capital was on the outskirts of the modern town in Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly San Juan).
Española is a high desert plateau surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo mountains, Carson Wilderness, and the Jemez Mountains, offering plenty of visual aesthetics as well as excellent areas for outdoor sports like hiking, skiing, camping, biking, and more. The surrounding pueblos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque offer extensive culturally diverse entertainment including the world-renown open air Santa Fe Opera, Taos Pueblo, Bandalier National Monument, Indian Market and Balloon Fiesta.
