Las Vegas Area
Las Vegas, NM is located 60 miles north of Santa Fe and is uniquely situated "where the Rocky Mountains meet the Great Plains." Las Vegas is a thriving community of distinctive cultures with access to history, recreation, education, tradition, arts and government. Originally called Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de Las Vegas Grandes (Our Lady of the Sorrows of the Great Meadows) Las Vegas was established by land grant in 1835. Unlike any other town in New Mexico, Las Vegas is home to a number of beautiful Victorian homes and buildings.
Las Vegas offers two opportunities for higher education; New Mexico Highlands University and Luna Community College. There are two national forests within easy reach and access to Taos, Santa Fe, Albuquerque and other surrounding areas which offer extensive culturally diverse entertainment including the world-renown open air Santa Fe Opera, Taos Pueblo, Bandalier National Monument, Indian Market and Balloon Fiesta.
